Congratulations, Katrina

Our very own Katrina got the job done and Sanger Elementary has a garden. Sure there was a long list of thank you's in the auditorium, but we all know she got this done.

Garden Gallery juror at the Arboretum

This morning Jeff Levine met me at the Arboretum. Joy had the Garden Gallery submissions laid out beautifully and Jeff's jury sheet ready. Jeff went on and on about the quality of the work. Joy left him alone, but I followed like a puppy to learn more. Hopefully, Jeff will mention Garden Gallery and Artscape in his very popular website Check out his website. I love the real estate section with the fabulous modern houses.

Garden Gallery will be on display during Artscape at the Arboretum March 20 and 21. Ninety artist have been juried in for Artscape in the garden during Dallas Blooms. Don't miss this incredible art show. I'm sure you have this inked on your day planner and reminders set on your computer. There's a meeting tonight at Juli and Doug's. I'll tell report after.

And of course, the always, ever popular, voted best garden and artists' tour in the whole wide world - White Rock East Garden & Artisans' Tour, May 23.

Here she is, our little flower in the garden. This is how we spend an exciting Saturday night. You always think of kitties as pristine, constantly grooming and taking care of themselves. Miss Calico our 16 year old grooms by rolling in the dirt and who knows where else. Bob holds her while I cut out the mats and try to brush her. I hold her down while he shampoos her. Takes 3 towels to semi-dry her.

Becoming an indoor cat is also good because Miss Calico loves to go next door to Aunt Kathleen's, terrorize her kitties and eat their food. So hard for the family when your child is a terrorist.

Forest Hills Garden Club February meeting

Wow! Great garden club meeting last night. First, Mary and garden girls had great food. I'll be writing an article in Black White Read soon with the foodie details. Mike gave a great talk on growing tomatoes. Kinda complicated, but that doesn't stop us. Mary had parting gifts for us - tomato seeds from the Arboretum. Mike gave me eggs from his chickens, a special gift. I've got to figure out something to make with the shells after eating the eggs. They are beautiful colors. Seriously, aren't we the cutest group?

Dates to remember: March 20-21 Artscape at the Arboretum
May 23 - White Rock East Garden & Artisans' Tour

And send more names for Barbara Dybala's cement mixer.

Forest Hills Garden Club meets tomorrow night

Forest Hills Garden Club meets tomorrow at Mary's. Mike - gardener extraordinaire, will speak to us. Everyone's looking forward to this one. I might consider a touch of heckling, but the garden girls would sit on me. Everyone wants to hear his advice. Mike's also in charge of the White Rock East Garden & Artisans' Tour plant sale (May 23). You'd think now would be the time to get on his good side in hopes of buying some of the plant sale plants before the hordes get there. But no, there's a very strict rule about that one. Add fanatic gardeners with fanatic garden tour organizers and don't be messing with them.

Check out this BlackWhiteRead article for commentary on the first general planning meeting for the tour.

And please go back and read my BlackWhiteRead article on naming Barbara Dybala's cement mixer. I have lots of names I can't put in print. People - I need some clean names! Email me or put them in the comments block in this article. I get them either way.

Remember fabulous prizes given for Artscape at the Arboretum (March 20-21).

And always check out for odd tidbits.

Fabulous bottle tree

I love bottle trees. I've made bottle trees. I grew up with bottle trees in New Iberia, knew the folklore and believed every word. Everyone needs a bottle tree to keep the evil spirits bottle in.

This bottle tree blows all of them out of the water. Who's bottle tree is this? Barbara Dybabala's. Of course.

Send some names for Barbara's cement mixer. Half the names that have been emailed are not for print in a blog or Black White Read article. Ooops! Shows the kind of people I know. Please, send some names - you can put them in the comments in this article.

BlackJack and insulators in the snow

I would love to keep the snow on the insulator chandelier and put lights inside. Wouldn't that be cool? But only occasional snow on BlackJack. He's good for a few minutes, but then ready to come in.

Don't forget to vote for Barbara Dybala's mixer. I'm getting lots of names through email because friends can't figure out how to leave comments on the blog. I love that they're just like me.

Here's Tic Tac Hearts in the snow before noon. Then my rain gauge later that afternoon. Unfortunately I didn't take the glass tube out and it cracked. Interesting how the snow clings to the curve. Because we have power, I can say we are really enjoying the snow.

Don't forget to post your name for Barbara Dybala's cement mixer comment section.

Who Dat Say Who Dat?

I haven't heard from the rest of Louisiana, but friends and family in New Iberia tell me the party continues right now on Main Street. I can remember watching the Saints as a little kid on Indest Street.

To all my Guilbeau, Arceneau, Babineaux and Rousseau relatives and friends:

Laissez les bons temps rouler. (Let the good times roll)

Suggestion: double click on New Iberia a really interesting town with an interesting history.

James Lee Burke one of my all time favorite writers spent half his life there and wrote novels set in New Iberia. The first novel I read his hero, Dave Robicheaux, was sitting in the parking lot of the New Iberia courthouse waiting for the rain to abate enough to go inside. If Dave would have turned his head to his left he would have been looking at my aunts' house. The three of them were born, raised and still live in that house.

If Dave were real, as some point during his career in the sheriff's department, he would have knocked on their door when a hurricane was on the way and begged them to go to a safe place. All three were school teachers. All three would have taught him at some time. Knowing they would never consider leaving the house, Dave (as the real sheriff's do) would be keeping a special eye on them and the house.

If you haven't read a James Lee Burke novel about New Iberia, run to your bookstore or library now. Nothing better than getting yourself lost in Dave Robicheaux' world.

More El Corazon pictures

El Corazon at the Bath House

El Corazon reception last night. Randall and Jamie came in from Denton. Randall hasn't missed an art opening I've been involved in yet, even coming to the garden tours. Thank you, dear heart. The second picture is of Juli's heart showcasing her wonderful cut glass pieces and safety glass. She's going to help me with a piece I want to do in safety glass involving Randall's art. The girls in the picture are great artists, friends and my support group. I also have to mention how supportive their husbands are of me. Bob, Randall, Jamie and I went on to the Times Ten Cellar show to see Jay, Marty and others. Then to Penne Pomodoro in Lakewood Shopping Center, where I confess we had not eaten since they opened. Bob suggested it and everyone's dinner was delicious. Better yet, everyone in the restaurant made us feel so welcome. I have leftovers to munch on during the Super Bowl. We'll be regulars from now on. Going to see Mom and then Glo and I are going walking before the Super Bowl comes on.

Hand made Valentine's Day cards

Girls night out at Laurie's. First dinner. The girls brought wonderful food. Glo's baked potatoes were snapped up quickly. Dessert, Laurie's cobbler and Cathie's cookies. Cathie let me take some home to Bob, then suggested a couple more for Mom. Thank you, Cathie, for thinking of my Mom (and shame on me).

We were all impressed with the cards we made. Of course, these ladies are artists, but not all in this medium. Plus, all were handicapped by mulit-tasking. You had to talk, listen and work on your piece all at the same time. All breezed thru the multi-tasking.

Tonight's the El Corazon reception @ The Bathouse - 7:00 to 9:00 pm.

More at and I'll probably write a column about it on Keep checking the paper daily.
